Our Neighbor in Need

In the Fall of 2017, Hurricane Maria’s ferocious 155 mph winds plowed through the island of Puerto Rico, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Following the worst natural disaster in Puerto Rico’s history, All Hands and Hearts opened two programs to assist with the recovery effort.

All Hands and Hearts – Smart Response (allhandsandhearts.org) effectively addresses the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by natural disasters. This is accomplished by listening to local people and deploying a model of engaging volunteers in order to rebuild safe and resilient homes, schools, and other community infrastructure.

In Yabucoa, the work includes mucking and gutting residences, roof and home repairs, tree removal, and demolition. The program has volunteers working alongside homeowners to create sustainable housing.

Several years ago the council set aside a sabbatical period to make it possible to explore the world in a new way. Alyson and I will be using this time during the month of September. We will travel to Puerto Rico to serve the Yabucoa community in their ongoing recovery effort.

During our time there we hope to keep you informed of our work through personal accounts and pictures. Pastors Bob Kleinke and Ron Hunt will be available for all ministerial responsibilities in September.
